Receiving money from abroad

Find out about receiving money from abroad

Receive money from abroad

Receiving paper-based payments from abroad can be costly, so it's important to use the best method for the money you are receiving.  Electronic payments is our recommendation, but we can also arrange to clear drafts and cheques on your behalf.

Bank-to-Bank electronic links

For speed and security, we recommend that you ask for overseas money to be sent to you through electronic bank-to-bank links.

Handling Drafts & Cheques

We can arrange clearance for drafts or cheques drawn in foreign currency and/or on an overseas bank.

Bank to Bank Electronic

Using electronic links between banks is the quickest and most secure method of receiving currency & euro payments from abroad and currency from within the Republic of Ireland.

There are a wide range of benefits to using this method of transfer, including:

  • Electronic payment instructions are sent from the sender's bank directly into your account
  • Funds will be credited to your account as soon as possible. This will be either on the value date or, if this is not possible, on the next best possible value date
  • It eliminates the paper-work involved in handling paper-based payments
  • Inward euro payments charged at €2 each for any value when the money is sent directly to Ulster Bank. Fees differ for other currencies
  • Our fees are debited up front before we credit your account. We will provide you a credit advice showing a breakdown of any charges
  • Automatic currency conversion - payments will be converted into the currency of your account.

International payments comprise of both cross-border payments, whether in euro or foreign currency, and foreign currency payments within the Republic of Ireland.

Handling Drafts and Cheques

Although we do not recommend that you receive paper-based payments from abroad, we can arrange to clear these on your behalf. You can submit cheques and drafts drawn on banks abroad or UK banks to be cleared on your behalf.

Drafts and cheques from abroad can be handled either by negotiation or collection.

Minimise costs by paying items which are in the same currency, drawn on banks in the same country, for negotiation, in a single pay-in to your account.
