Strong Customer Authentication

We're introducing smarter, stronger and safer ways to keep you protected online

An extra level of security to keep you safe online

Online fraud is on the rise. Scammers are getting smarter and more sophisticated in how they try to access your personal details – and your money.

To comply with the new Payment Service Directive 2 (PSD2) we introduced an extra layer of protection for you online. We implemented Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) – which meant asking you to confirm your identity more often when you go to buy something online with your card or use Anytime or Mobile Banking and this means that we’ll know it’s definitely you using your details.

This technology continues to evolve, and we will continue to take the necessary steps in order to help reduce fraud and keep you safe.

What's changing?

We will be replacing the One Time Passcode (OTP) text which we use for authentication of online shopping transactions with your credit or debit card. Instead, you may be asked to log into our Mobile App in order to confirm your online shopping transaction as this allows us to be much more confident of your identity.

You may continue to receive the OTP as part of logging into Anytime Banking or to complete certain tasks or we may also ask you at times to use your card reader with your debit card (or your Anytime Banking card if you don't have a debit card) when logging into Anytime Banking.

What do you need to do?

We strongly recommend that you download and register for our Mobile App, as this will become the main way for you to authorise your online shopping transactions. We also suggest that you turn your notifications on for the app, so you will be aware of any transactions that may be waiting for your authorisation.

It is also really important that we have the correct mobile number for your account. If we don’t, we won’t be able to send you a One Time Passcode.

That means you won't be able to log into your account, or complete your transactions. We also won't be able to alert you if we see any suspicious activity on your account.

*App available on most smartphones to customers with Anytime Internet Banking and a Republic of Ireland or international mobile number in specific countries. Some payment options not available to customers under the age of 16.

Tackling Fraudsters

It helps to know how fraudsters work, so that you can avoid their tricks. Here are some tips to help:

  • Never share your full Anytime Banking PIN or password with anyone over the phone, by text, or by email - even if they claim to be from the bank or the police.
  • Never share your card reader codes, One Time Passcode, app passcode or activation codes with anyone.
  • Never take an instruction from a stranger asking you to transfer money from your account.
  • If someone calls you unexpectedly, never let them to access your computer remotely.
  • Always keep your contact details up to date - that's so we can get in touch with you immediately if we spot suspicious activity on your account.
